Important Things To Pack When Visiting Malta And Gozo

Malta & Gozo Packing List

Malta is a fascinating and beautiful European country to visit. With endless coastlines and captivating old cities, there is so much to see and explore.

This means it is essential that you are prepared for your trip to Malta by knowing exactly what you need to pack and what you need to prioritise in that suitcase.

You don’t want to land at the Malta airport and suddenly remember forgetting to pack something essential for your day trip to Gozo.

In the summer months (May-September), the temperature can easily reach 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit), so it’s best to come prepared for hot weather.

Similarly, in the winter months (October-April), you may have to bring some warmer clothes as many of the restaurants and hotels don’t have heating so you may find it a little cooler in the evenings.

Here’s our list of the essential things you should pack when visiting Malta and Gozo this year:

Things to pack that will protect you in Malta and Gozo

It is important to look after your body when you go on holiday, so packing a selection of items to protect you in Malta and Gozo is going to be essential. These are going to be some of the most essential items on your Malta packing list.

Sunscreen

As mentioned earlier, the summers in Malta and Gozo can be sweltering. In fact, they are some of the hottest temperatures in the whole of Europe. So packing a strong Sunscreen is absolutely essential.

Note: good sunscreen is hard to find in Malta (and near impossible in Gozo), so be sure to stock up before you fly. Here’s a handy place to find good sunscreen for your trip to Malta.

Lip-balm

Another essential item to pack with you when visiting Malta SPF lip balm. Malta has a very dry climate, so added to the high temperatures, your lips can quickly get dried and chapped. Click here to see the lip-balm we would recommend you packing

After Sun Moisturiser

Let’s face it, no matter how careful you are with sunscreen, there are often times you may have missed a spot. If you fall asleep in the sun on one of Malta’s many stunning beaches, then a very reliable After Sun Moisturiser will definitely come to the rescue.

Insect Repellent

Unfortunately, bugs and insects are fairly prevalent in Malta and Gozo, particularly in the summer, so insect repellent is one of those things you need to pack for Malta and Gozo.

Insect Repellent Bracelets are great for those who don’t mind wearing a little bit of colour on their wrists or ankles, but for those who prefer to go for the more conventional approach, it is best to pack Traditional Insect Repellent

Tiger Balm

It is almost a given that at some stage during your Maltese adventure, you are going to get bitten by a mosquito. For that eventuality, it is important to pack a little pot of Tiger Balm. It is great for soothing bug bites and we’ve never found anything that works better.

Sunglasses

This essential item is fairly self-explanatory but you are definitely going to need sunglasses when visiting Malta. Imagine going on a once-in-a-lifetime Catamaran trip to the Blue Lagoon and having to squint all day to keep your eyes open because you’d forgotten your sunglasses.

Things to pack for Malta’s Beaches

Swimming, snorkelling and diving are some of the best things to do in Gozo (Malta) and are a major part of why so many people choose to visit Malta’s second-largest island. This means it’s vastly important to pack everything you need to make the most of some of the best underwater conditions in the whole of Europe.

Snorkel/Goggles

This is arguably the most important thing to pack when visiting Malta. Malta is renowned as being one of the best snorkel and diving destinations in the world!

There’s nothing worse than when your goggles fog up and water gets into your snorkel when swimming around searching for fish.

We have a Snorkel Mask and Flippers Set like this and it makes for great snorkelling conditions. It’s a great investment if you love being in the sea as much as us.

Top tip: many of the best Gozo day trips stop via the blue lagoon on the way to the island, so bringing a snorkel and flippers set with you is essential!

Beach Shoes

Although Malta is renowned for its coastline, many of the beaches are rocky and stoney, highlighting how important it is to pack the correct footwear for a trip to Malta.

If you’re looking for a shoe that can function as a sandal, beach shoe, hiking shoe and more, then it’s difficult to look past the Mens Chacos and Womens Chacos .

You could walk straight off the ferry in Valletta, wander around to Sliema, jump into the sea for a swim, and then head back to Floriana for an evening meal without ever having to change your shoes.

Microfiber Beach Towels

It is fairly inevitable that during your trip to Malta, you will be in and out of the water, whether it's the hotel pool or the tranquil waters surrounding Comino.

For this, you don’t want to be lugging around heavy, wet, sandy towels so packing yourself a Microfiber Travel Towel Set that dries within minutes is going to be a life-saver.

Flip-flops

You want to be comfortable during your trip to Malta, and you don’t want to spend half your time trying to fix the broken flip-flop that you bought in Greece 6 and a half years ago. Pack yourself a new pair of Women’s Havaianas or Men’s Havaianas, and don’t have any worries.

Essential phone accessories to pack for Malta and Gozo

As you can imagine, the number of incredible photo opportunities in Malta and Gozo is endless. From the charming balconies in Valletta, to the extravagant yachts in Portomaso, you need to make sure you are prepared for a photo at any time - packing these items will certainly help you do that.

Portable Phone Tripod

Brilliant quality photos are essential when going on holiday, which makes this an essential item to pack when visiting Malta and Gozo.

Gone are the days when you had to buy a costly camera to get the best holiday photos possible - instead, pack yourself a handy gadget to improve your instagram photos, learn one or two Photoshop tricks, and you’ll have postcard-worthy holiday snaps in no time.

Waterproof Phone Pouch

We may have mentioned once or twice that you will often be in and around the water during your Malta trip. Most days, you will find yourself on a ferry or a boat excursion, so it’s best to look after your phone by placing it in a Waterproof Phone Pouch, just to be sure.

Portable Charger

You’re going to find yourself away from the hotel or Airbnb for hours on end, so make sure to pack a reliable portable charger for when your phone needs a little extra juice. Click here to see the reliable portable charger we always take on our trips.

Miscellaneous essential items to pack for Malta and Gozo

The final few items on our Malta and Gozo packing list are a selection of different essentials that will make your trip all the more stress-free and relaxing.

Portable Fan

It really does get hot in Malta during the summer, and shade isn’t always easy to come by. Yes, an iced coffee or two can cool you down, but nothing works quite as well as Personal Handheld Fan - they really are game-changing.

This is a great thing to pack for Malta if you’re going to be visiting during the hotter summer months - though even in the winter, Malta is generally far warmer than the rest of Europe.

Travel Adapter

This is one of those items that everybody, whether you travel full-time or just manage a couple of trips away a year, should own.

A Universal Travel Adapter comes in handy in any country and nowadays, you can buy them with built-in USB plugs to take care of all your charging needs.

Note: Malta and Gozo use the standard G plug that is found in the UK. There are times when you will find an appliance, like a kettle, that is wired for the standard European plug though. So getting a universal travel adapter is always handy.

Bamboo Socks

Bare with us here because we were skeptical of Bamboo Socks initially too. However, now we have started to wear them more regularly, they really are brilliant.

They keep your feet so much cooler than regular socks, and crucially, they make your feet smell better for much longer - they quickly become an essential item for your Malta packing list as you’re going to be getting very hot, in the summer months especially.

Water Bottle

You want to make sure you bring an Insulated Water Bottle with you to Malta for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, using a water bottle cuts down on your reliance on single-use plastic water bottles which is great for the environment. Secondly, an insulated water bottle, like the Hydro Flask, is able to keep water cooler for longer, which is vital for summers in Malta and Gozo.

Bringing a reliable water bottle with you is one of the most important packing tips for long-term travel

Malta Travel Guide

One of the most essential things on your Malta packing list should be a reliable Malta & Gozo Travel Guide.

Travel Blogs (like this one) are brilliant in providing information and tips for countless destinations around the world, but staring at your phone all day when on holiday can get quite repetitive.

For this reason, we like to do all our research online before we travel and then stick to a paper travel guide once we arrive at our destination. There’s something magical about sitting in a coffee shop abroad reading your Malta & Gozo Travel Guide

We hope our list of the important things to pack when visiting Malta and Gozo has given you a rough idea of the essential items you need to consider before flying to the beautiful European country of Malta.

Now that you know what to pack for Malta and Gozo, you’ll probably be in need of a great place to stay - a round-up of the best boutique hotels in Gozo is a good place to begin searching for the best accommodation options in Gozo.
