Itaewon - Where to Stay in Seoul for a First-Time Visit

Cosmopolitan dining, lively nightlife, Korean BBQ restaurants and historical museums - Itaewon has a bit of everything, making it the perfect place to stay in Seoul for a first-time visit.

Itaewon is found just to the North of the Han River, making it a walking distance from N Seoul Tower, the War Memorial of Korea and the National Museum of Korea. Thankfully, Seoul is a very walkable city, making it easy to get from place to place.

Why we recommend Itaewon as the best area in Seoul to stay is because it is so diverse. If you’re an avid explorer, you can walk around the neighbourhood for hours. If you’re more of a foodie traveller, it won’t take you long to find some markets where the food is equally as delicious and at a fraction of the cost of the restaurants.

Even those coming to Korea for a party will find the area has exactly what they need - cheap bars where the soju flows until the early morning hours!

Where to stay in Itaewon?

Below, we have highlighted some suggestions for the best places to stay in Itaewon. We offer recommendations of where to stay in Itaewon based on different budgets, so every type of traveller should find a great accommodation option in Itaewon here.

Best Luxury Hotel in Itaewon: Hamilton Hotel

Rooftop pool. Metres from the Itaewon Subway Station. State of the art seasonal sauna. Korean BBQ restaurant on site. If you’re not sold yet, we’re not sure you’ll ever be!

The Hamilton Hotel is an excellent luxury choice for anybody looking to stay in Itaewon, and best of all, luxury here comes at a fraction of the cost of other grand hotels in Seoul.

Best Budget-friendly Hotel in Itaewon: Nouvelle Seoul Itaewon

This brand new, modern, comfortable hotel is found a mile from the War Memorial of Korea and is an excellent budget-friendly option in Itaewon.

You can rarely find a brand new hotel for this cheap, especially in a costly city like Seoul, so we’d jump at the chance to stay at the Nouvelle Seoul Itaewon if we were you!

Best Hostel in Itaewon: G Guesthouse

A 2-minute walk from Itaewon station and complimentary breakfast every morning with any stay, it’s hard to argue against the G Guesthouse

As one of the best hostels in Seoul, the Guesthouse has a very sociable atmosphere, making it ideal for solo travellers that want to meet new people while travelling through Korea.

Myeongdong - Where to Stay in Seoul for Shopping Lovers

Myeongdong is where we decided to stay in Seoul because we’d researched all the best neighbourhoods, and decided that the location of Myeongdong was the best for us.

We enjoy walking a lot when visiting new cities, so as much as we had all the best things to do in Myeongdong on our doorstep, including the best street food in Myeongdong, we also liked the fact that we were within walking distance of Gwangjang Market and other major sites in Seoul.

Myeongdong is the shopping capital of Korea and is brimming with tourist-friendly shops to explore. We (mainly Orla) particularly loved the personal shopping experience offered in the majority of the K-beauty stores in Myeongdong.

Where to stay in Myeongdong?

Below, we have highlighted our suggestions for where to stay in Myeondong. We’ve tried to recommend the best places to stay in Myeongdong that cater to any budget or travel style. Remember, we stayed in Myeongdong during our 3-week Seoul Adventure, so we know just how amazing the area is to stay in!

Best Luxury Hotel in Myeongdong: Hotel28 Myeongdong

The last time we were in Korea, we weren’t able to book a night at Hotel28 because it was fully booked up, and we were absolutely gutted.

The hotel has recently become Korea’s first hotel to become a member of the elite ‘Small Luxury Hotels of the World Ltd’, so you can be guaranteed quality at this boutique, yet surprisingly affordable, hotel.

There’s something particularly satisfying about a free-standing bath tub in a hotel room, don’t you think?

Best Budget-friendly Hotel in Myeongdong: Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong

There are many budget-friendly places to stay in Myeongdong, ranging from unbelievably cheap hostel dorm rooms to really nice hotel rooms that are astonishingly cheap for what they offer.

Nine Tree Premier Hotel is definitely one of those that falls into the latter category. With great views over Myeongdong and a surprisingly large gym, the Nine Tree Premier Hotel has everything you’d want from an affordable, inner-city hotel.

Best Hostel in Myeongdong: Step Inn Myeongdong

We’ve actually stayed at the Step Inn Myeongdong on 3 different occasions, so we can vouch for how good it is.

We don’t want to kid you, it’s a fairly basic hostel, but the complimentary breakfast (usually continental), wifi strength, unrivalled location and price, it’s hard to argue against the Step Inn.

It’s a particularly great hostel for those looking for a long-term, affordable place to stay in Seoul.

Gangnam - Best Area for Nightlife in Seoul

If you’re visiting Seoul and want to get right into the thick of the action, then Gangnam is the best place to stay in Seoul.

The district was made famous by Ksi and his legendary song, but that is only a brief introduction to what to expect in the area.

Gangnam is Seoul on steroids - think lively bars, excessive high-end shopping, crazy bars and insane technology. There is a bit of absolutely everything in Gangnam!

The region's explosive nightlife must be experienced first-hand to be explained. At all hours of the day (and night) in Gangnam, K-Pop is playing, and the Soju is flowing.

Where to stay in Gangnam?

Here’s our recommendations for where to stay in Gangnam. Again, we’ve tried to include suggestions of the best places to stay in Gangnam that cover every travel budget, so hopefully, you’ll find something that suits you here.

Best Luxury Hotel in Gangnam: Josun Palace

‘Get the celebrity treatment with world class service at Josun Palace’. These are the first words you read when booking the most luxurious place to stay in Gangnam and it’s hard to disagree.

The 5-Star Hotel has everything you’d want from a luxury place to stay in Seoul, including an indoor swimming pool, relaxing sauna and an extravagant bar with panoramic views of the city.

Best Budget-friendly Hotel in Gangnam: L7 Gangnam

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel in Gangnam, look no further than L7 Gangnam

The hotel has everything you want from reliable, budget-conscious accommodation in the heart of a major city - it still has room for a coffee-machine and those cute little slippers that you get to take as a souvenir.

Best Hostel in Gangnam: YaKorea Hostel

We love budget-conscious travel, which is why we love staying in hostels as a couple. They are a great way to socialise, meet new people, and get recommendations for the best things to do in the place you’re staying.

In Gangnam, we recommend staying at the YaKorea Hostel as it is centrally located, clean, spacious and offers private or dorm rooms (note that the dorm rooms unfortunately don’t have curtains on the beds).

Hongdae - Budget-friendly Place to Stay in Seoul

Named after the Hongik University, Hongdae is the most vibrant and energetic part of the city. During the day it is busy with eager shoppers searching for big brand deals, while at night it transforms into the bar and karaoke capital of Seoul.

Hongdae offers travellers the chance to immerse themselves in the vibrant culture that defines this crazy neighbourhood - and best of all, you can do it on a budget too!

From the lively markets to the innovative street food scene, staying in Hongdae is an immersive journey into Seoul's contemporary arts and culture scene, making it the ideal choice for those seeking a lively, but affordable, atmosphere.

Top tip: Hongdae is renowned for its impromptu street performances, so make sure you always follow the noise from crowds in order to see these live shows.

Where to stay in Hongdae?

Below, we have highlighted some suggestions for the best places to stay in Hongdae. We’ve once again recommended luxury, budget-friendly, and hostel options for where to stay in Hongdae.

Best Luxury Hotel in Hongdae: RYSE Autograph Collection

Arguably the most romantic hotel on our list of the best places to stay in Seoul, the RYSE Autograph Collection would certainly be the pick of the bunch when it comes to a luxury stay for couples. Even the name of this place sounds luxurious!

While the rooms and decor are obviously very fancy, the thing we love the most about this hotel is the Side Note Club - a rooftop cocktail bar that hosts live music performances throughout the week.

Best Budget-friendly Hotel in Hongdae: Holiday Inn Express Hongdae

Personally, we love Holiday Inn hotels. They are reliable, affordable and a great budget-friendly option for families, solo travellers and couples alike.

This particular Holiday Inn Express happens to be located directly above the Honjik University Metro Station, giving you incredibly convenient access to the entire city of Seoul.

Best Hostel in Hongdae: Zzzip Guesthouse

Consistently recommended as the best hostel in Seoul, the Zzzip Guesthouse is the city’s most sociable and lively hostel. It’s the perfect place to connect with other travellers.

The guesthouse is run by owners Bryan and Gina, who will provide you with anything you need during your stay - on top of the free tea, coffee and breakfast every morning!

Insadong - Where to Stay in Seoul for Culture Lovers

Want to get to grips with Korean culture when you’re staying in Seoul? Insadong is the best neighbourhood for you!

In the narrow alleyways of Insadong, you will be greeted by an enchanting array of antique shops, art galleries, and quaint little tea houses - our favourite is O’Sulloc Tea House, as it provides an authentic taste of Korean tea culture. The green matcha tea is a must-try!

While sipping tea is one of the best things to do in Insadong, the area has much more to offer than that. For example, the vibrant Insadong Street Market is brimming with handmade crafts, calligraphy supplies, and traditional Korean snacks.

For culture aficionados, Insadong is undoubtedly the best area to stay in while exploring Seoul.

Where to stay in Insadong?

Here’s our suggestions for the best places to stay in Insadong - Seoul’s fascinating cultural centre. As always, we have tried to recommend where to stay in Insadong which will cater to all travel budgets. Take a look below!

Best Luxury Hotel in Insadong: Orokai Insadong Suites

Something a little bit different this time around - how about beautifully furnished, self-catering luxury apartments?

With a fully-equipped kitchenette and access to a gym, a swimming pool and a sauna, the Orokai Insadong Suites are the perfect luxury option for travellers looking to spend an extended period of time in Seoul.

It’s the perfect option for those who like a bit of room to spread out and flexibility when it comes to cooking your own meals from time to time while you’re away.

Best Budget-friendly Hotel in Insadong: Nine Tree Premier Hotel Insadong

Now, we know what you’re thinking, didn’t you already recommend this hotel in Myeongdong? Well we did recommend the Nine Tree Premier Hotel in Myeongdong, but this hotel is about 15 minutes North on the subway and is actually in Insadong.

We love the Nine Tree Premier Hotel brand because it offers affordable comfort. As businessmen and women often use it, the hotel is quiet and efficient - making it a great place to stay in Insadong, Seoul.

Best Hostel in Insadong: Insa Hostel

The cheapest recommendation on our list of the best hostels in Seoul, the Insa Hostel features a really cool rooftop hangout area that is great for relaxing and socialising.

We especially love the fact that the Insa Hostel is within walking distance of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgong Palace, meaning you don’t have to spend money on the metro - making it an even better, budget-friendly option when you’re looking for where to stay in Seoul.

Dongdaemun - Best Neighbourhood in Seoul for Families

Dongdaemun is our choice for the best, well-rounded and family-friendly area of Seoul to stay in. This busy district combines a convenient location (easily accessible from all over the city) with a plethora of family-oriented attractions, making it an ideal home base for those travelling with little ones.

One of the main highlights in the area is Dongdaemun Design Plaza, the iconic architectural marvel that hosts various exhibitions and events. It’s great for exploring with kids, both day and night.

As well as being one of the safest neighbourhoods in Seoul, Dongdaemun boasts an array of family-friendly restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, catering to different tastes and preferences.

Dongdaemun ensures a convenient and enjoyable stay for families looking to create lasting memories in the heart of Seoul.

Where to stay in Dongdaemun?

Here’s where we recommend staying in Dongdaemun. The area is generally a little less touristy (Dongdaemun Design Plaza aside), so the options are a little more limited. However, we think our recommendations of where to stay in Dongdaemun will give you a good idea of what’s available in this area of Seoul.

Best Luxury Hotel in Dongdaemun: Hotel Skypark Kingstown Dongdaemun

The Hotel Skypark Kingstown in Dongdaemun is definitely one of those hotels that might not look too fancy from the outside, but once you step inside the lobby, you’ll soon realise you’ve found a gem in the middle of the city.

For an extra special stay, we recommend the ‘Residence Deluxe Room’ that includes wonderful views of Seoul’s iconic skyline.

Best Budget-friendly Hotel in Dongdaemun: Mangrove Sinseol

A simple, no-frills, everything you need in once place, kind of hotel in the heart of Dongdaemun. This budget-friendly offering provides comfort and convenience for a fraction of the price of a big chain hotel in Seoul.

With the Dongdaemun Design Plaza less than a mile away, and with a subway station a matter of steps from the lobby doors, the Mangrove Sinseol has the perfect location and is a great base to call home when visiting Seoul.

Best Hostel in Dongdaemun: K-Grand Hostel

We stayed here a couple of times during our trip to Korea and the thing we liked about it, quite simply, was the price.

We struggled to find a cheaper private room anywhere in Dongdaemun and although the facilities aren’t anything to write home about, when you’re just in need of a clean, comfy bed to stay for the night at a reasonable price, then the K-Grand Hostel is your answer in Seoul.

Jongno - Historic Area of Seoul: Great For Quieter Visits

The neighbourhood of Jongno exudes a peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for visitors who appreciate a more laid-back setting.

Steeped in history, Jongno is home to several cultural landmarks, such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace - both offering a tranquil escape into the past with their picturesque gardens and traditional Korean architecture.

The nearby Bukchon Hanok Village provides an opportunity to stroll through charming narrow lanes lined with well-preserved traditional Korean houses.

When visiting Seoul, you will almost certainly venture to the Jongno district because it features many of the city’s cultural highlights. Why not skip the middleman and simply stay in Jongno instead?

Where to stay in Jongno?

Here’s our recommendations for where to stay in Jongno. You know the drill by now, we’ve tried to include suggestions of the best places to stay in Jongno that cover every travel budget, so hopefully you’ll find something that suits you.

Best Luxury Hotel in Jongno: Four Seasons Hotel Seoul

Commanding city views, traditional Korean Saunas, state-of-the-art dining options, and listen to this - an iPad in every room to access the hotel services. The Four Seasons Hotel is the real deal!

The hotel even features a 4D Golf Simulator, so if you fancy a round of golf at the best golf courses around the world from the comfort of your hotel, the Four Seasons is certainly the place to book.

The rooms are as lovely as you can imagine, but it’s the world-class facilities that make the Four Seasons Hotel the best luxury hotel to stay in Seoul. In particular, the Spa and Wellness Centre provides a welcome escape from the crazy hustle and bustle of Seoul.

Best Budget-friendly Hotel in Jongno: Tong Tong Petit Hotel

We think you’ll agree that this is the best-named hotel on our list of places to stay in Seoul!

Tong Tong Petit Hotel is fabulously located, with both Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung Palaces within a mile of the hotel’s front door.

The hotel has a very slick, modern design and features the Tong Tong Cafe downstairs. A great place to grab a coffee in the morning before heading out to explore everything Seoul has to offer.

Best Hostel in Jongno: Jongno Stay

600m from Gwangjang market, one of the best places to buy street food in Seoul, the Jongno Stay is a modern and efficient hostel.

All hostels nowadays should feature curtains around the beds in dorm rooms, and thankfully, the Jongno Stay provides in this area. It also features passcode-protected lockers for each guest, so there is no need to rifle around in your backpack to find that battered padlock.
